Imagine a Poem the competition winners

December 15, 2017

For National Poetry Day 2017 in association with Frances Lincoln and Amnesty International UK, we ran a special competition asking children to write a poem inspired by the theme of Freedom, and in particular John Lennon’s immortal song Imagine, which is now the basis for a beautiful picture book, illustrated by Jean Jullien.

Thank you to the 700 plus children and young people who entered the competition, and congratulations on the wonderful poems you wrote.

The winning poems are Imagine by Molly Suggitt, a pupil at Appleton Academy in Bradford, and Freedom by Basti Cook, a pupil at Chilmark and Fonthill Bishop Primary School, Salisbury.

Isaac Woodford, Isobel Lakeland and Amelia Burrell are highly commended in the older category, and Samson, Libby and Dot are highly commended in the younger category.

You can see all their poems below.

Molly and Basti’s poems are now being illustrated by National Poetry Day Ambassador and artist Sophie Herxheimer, and Molly, as overall winner, has won a visit to her school by National Poetry Day Ambassador Matt Goodfellow.

Congratulations to our winners and runners up, and thank you again to everyone who entered. Keep writing poetry!
